Kenzie by Arfion
Kenzie is about pushing the boundaries of style, while remaining authentic to where we come from. We aim to use our creative instincts without the fear of failure. Our goal is to keep true to ourselves, while working holistically and respectfully within our community. Kenzie is named after our Great Grandmother Annabella Mackenzie. A fiercely independent and strong Scottish woman who taught us that amazing things happen when you take risks.
Our canvas is the fruit grown in deep alluvial soils, formed over centuries by the braided rivers that are born in the ranges that shelter the Hawke’s Bay. Our Family have relied upon the abundant resources of the area for generations. As farmers and fishermen, they decided that these lands were right for them. Our grapes are grown using sustainable and organic practices. On vineyards where people farm their place with care and respect. Key to our story is the relationship we have with small, like minded growers who remain independent and strong. Working with diverse sites throughout the region inspires a variety of techniques, textures and styles.
After 15 years of making wines in the Yarra Valley under Arfion and Salo, Dave Mackintosh felt the emotional pull to return to Aotearoa and create unique, modern and beautiful wines from Hawke’s Bay / Te Matau a Māui soils. He sees wine as a dynamic mix of cultural, natural and emotional elements and their relationships. We shape these connections, but they can never be repeated. Dave employs lo-fi techniques that engage risk and challenge, while letting the wine flow naturally to where it wants to go. Mindful of vintage and style, crafting wines instinctively. Each vintage has a different story. Each wine paints a different picture.
