Castagna
The acclaim for his work from Jancis Robinson & Hugh Johnson alongside their recognition of Giaconda and Sorrenberg and the similarly fast rise to success of nearby neighbour, Savaterre has helped to put Beechworth on the international wine map as a region of great significance.
The Castagna Vineyard, winery & home is situated at an altitude of 500 metres just 5km outside of Beechworth in Northeast Victoria, high in the foothills of the Australian Alps. The soil consists mainly of decomposed granitic-loam on a base of clay. The land is farmed biodynamically because Julian believes it is not only the best way to achieve optimum fruit quality but also that it best expresses its terroir. The vineyard is hand-pruned and the fruit is hand-picked. The winemaking is very traditional using only their own vineyard’s indigenous yeast with minimal interference. The Castagna Vermouth is Australia’s first estate vermouth.
